As education continues to evolve, so do the needs of our students and families. Whether it’s due to health reasons, competitive sports, academic pacing, or the desire for a more personalized experience, today’s learners benefit from options that go beyond the traditional classroom.
That’s where Eagleview Online, Whitley County Consolidated Schools’ virtual K–12 school, comes in.
Launched in the 2024–2025 school year, Eagleview Online was created with a thoughtful, focused approach. Rather than open enrollment to the masses, the district strategically marketed the school to a small group of families—including current online learners and homeschoolers—to ensure that the program started strong and served students well right out of the gate.
“Our goal was to give this new school a solid foundation. We hovered around 10 students each semester and focused on quality over quantity. It’s been exciting to see students thrive in an environment that’s flexible, personalized, and supportive,” said Kyle Nelson, Director of Eagleview Online
A School of Its Own
Eagleview Online isn’t just an add-on program—it’s a fully recognized K–12 public school, designated by the Indiana Department of Education as its own entity within WCCS. Any student residing within the district boundaries or a surrounding county is eligible to apply; however, enrollment is selective by design. “We only accept students who have already demonstrated success in school and who have strong support systems at home. This helps ensure that every student is positioned to thrive in an independent learning environment,” Nelson said.
Students must be in good academic and attendance standing. This policy helps prevent students from falling behind and protects the integrity of the online program.
How It Works
The WCCS website is a great place to start. Visit wccsonline.com and choose Eagleview Online from the Schools Menu. On the webpage, you will find the Penn State Questionnaire to see if virtual education is a good option. Families interested in enrolling begin with a simple application. Once submitted, they receive a personal phone call to schedule an onboarding meeting. These meetings are designed to be thorough and informative, parents are encouraged to ask questions and explore whether Eagleview Online is the right fit.
After the initial meeting, families may enroll, decline, or take a few days to consider. Students in grades K–8 are assigned specific online classes, while those in grades 9–12 meet with a high school counselor to create a personalized online schedule. Students may choose to go fully online or adopt a hybrid model, taking up to two in-person classes. More than two classes requires a student to return to traditional school.
Eagleview Online uses Edmentum’s EdOptions Academy as its curriculum partner. Through Edmentum, students gain access to a comprehensive digital learning platform. Elementary students connect regularly with online teachers, while middle and high school students rely more on interactive slide decks, recorded lessons, guided notes, and access to academic coaches and virtual instructors as needed.
Applications are due August 1 for the 2025 School Year.
The Benefits of Flexibility
One of the most powerful aspects of Eagleview Online is its flexibility. Students can manage their school day based on their needs, working longer on challenging subjects and moving more quickly through areas of strength.
“Our students love the ability to work at their own pace. They say they’re more focused without distractions and finish their coursework more efficiently. That gives them time to explore other interests; whether that’s sports, field trips, family time, college exploration, or career development,” Nelson said.
Students have joined Eagleview Online for a variety of reasons from chronic health conditions and mental health needs to behavioral considerations and social challenges. Some are pursuing elite athletic goals while others are high-achievers looking for room to grow.
Staying Connected
While Eagleview Online provides a flexible learning environment, students remain part of the Whitley County Consolidated Schools community. Online students can participate in extracurricular programs at their designated elementary school or at ISMS.
For high school students, Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) regulations require students to take at least one in-person class to be eligible for sports, making it essential for CCHS athletes to be hybrid learners.
Also, as part of state requirements, all Eagleview students must attend in-person sessions for state-mandated assessments (such as ILEARN, IREAD, WIDA, PSAT, SAT, etc.) and medical screenings. The Eagleview Online team works hard to limit these days to keep the online experience as uninterrupted as possible.
