Columbia City High School and Garrett High School students completed the Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses’ first-ever Commercial Driver's License (CDL) skills test with exceptional passing rates.
Columbia City High School and Garrett High School started a new partnership to offer a first-of-its-kind CDL program for high school students this spring semester. The program was available to seniors from both Columbia City High School and Garrett High School. The qualifications for the CDL are strict and students had to be 18 years of age by May 5, 2025, a skilled operator, in good standing with the school for discipline and attendance, and more.
Columbia City High School seniors Noah Haselby, Eli Ralston, Jon Reiff and Garrett Shepherd passed their skills test in Indianapolis on May 28, 2025, with 100 percent pass rate!
During their skills test the students had to complete pre-trip inspections, maneuver backing, ramps, parallel parking, show proficient driving skills, and complete the test without any critical driving errors.
The partnership was complete with the Center for Transportation Safety who provided the instructor, Tina Carlos, prep and test materials, and the truck for the entire process.
“This partnership is a true collaboration between business and education to provide meaningful learning opportunities and experiences for students The CDL License is one more way our local schools are working to support local community employment demands,” said Jennifer Reiff, WCCS Career and Technical Education Director.
Additionally, appreciation is sent to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) for allowing the students to use the space east of Columbia City along U.S. 30 for training and driving purposes.
This innovative program, named Triple L, for leading logistical learning, allowed participating students to earn a non-restricted Class A CDL license before they graduate. This comprehensive training provided students with the skills and credentials needed to pursue careers as professional truck drivers, bus drivers, and other CDL-required roles.
This groundbreaking partnership between Columbia City High School and Garrett High School marks a significant milestone for the entire Northeast Indiana community. By providing this unique educational opportunity, the schools are empowering the next generation of skilled professionals and paving the way for continued growth of CTE pathways and opportunities for students.
