On Friday, May 23, the ISMS 6th grade student body participated in our annual Memorial Day Event, an impactful day of learning, remembrance, and service. Throughout the day, students rotated through five engaging World War II-themed sessions, each designed to deepen their understanding of the history and significance of this global conflict. A highlight for many was the opportunity to meet and interact with local veterans, bringing history to life through meaningful personal connections.
One particularly memorable session focused on the powerful symbol of the poppy, inspired by the famous poem In Flanders Fields. Students read the poem together and learned how it sparked a movement of remembrance for fallen U.S. service members. Each student then crafted two or more tissue paper poppies to be donated to veterans.
In total, ISMS students made and donated 879 poppies to the VA Hospital in Fort Wayne. These handmade tokens of appreciation are given to veterans — some receive them on their food trays, while others proudly wear them in their hats during visits. This marks the third consecutive year our 6th graders have participated in this act of service, and their efforts continue to make a lasting impact on those who have served our country.
Then, on Tuesday, May 27, ISMS held its 3rd annual Poppy Presentation Ceremony to officially present all 879 poppies. Mr. Josh Smith, Whitley County Veterans Service Officer, and Mr. Eric Butler, Outreach Coordinator from the Fort Wayne VA Hospital, accepted the donation on behalf of the veterans they serve.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this meaningful event. As a school community, we remain committed to honoring the sacrifices of those who have served our nation. May we never forget.
