Teacher of the Year Presentation

Whitley County Consolidated Schools (WCCS) proudly celebrated excellence in education during the Columbia City High School football game by honoring the 2025 Teacher of the Year and Exemplary Staff Member of the Year with a new car and a check donated by City Automall.

Chris Bechtold, Columbia City High School's Eagle Tech Academy Math/Engineering Facilitator, was named Teacher of the Year. Bechtold has served Eagle Tech Academy for the past 13 years, inspiring students through project-based teaching and a passion for learning.

“I’m still shocked that among all the people I work with; I was chosen. I look around the building and, in our district, and see great teachers everywhere,” Bechtold said.

To further celebrate his achievement, Bechtold will drive a brand-new vehicle for the 2025/2026 school year, generously donated by City Chevy. In addition, Hilb Group will provide Mr. Bechtold with $1,000 to help cover the cost of insurance and plates while he drives the new car. Shirey emphasized the importance of supporting educators.

“Rewarding those who show the extra effort to our youth is more meaningful than it ever has been. We believe in the school system and give to those who selflessly give so much to our community. We need teachers now more than ever,” Shirey said about their support of the recognition.

Angela Miller, Eighth-grade Office Secretary at Indian Springs Middle School, was celebrated as Exemplary Staff Member of the Year. She received a $1,000 check from City Automall for her dedication and service.

“I love my job and working with the kids, it’s my passion. I’m not any more deserving than anyone else. It’s not a job for me, it’s what I truly love,” Miller said.

Superintendent Laura McDermott shared her pride in the recipients.

“Chris and Angela represent the heart of our schools. They are dedicated, passionate and humble individuals who make a real difference every day. We’re grateful for their service, just as we are every other teacher and staff member. We were honored to celebrate them with our community.”

WCCS invites the community to continue recognizing outstanding educators and staff. Nominations for Teacher and Staff Member of the Month for September are now open. Each month, through April, WCCS will honor one teacher of the month and one staff member of the month who will be considered for Teacher and Staff of the Year.
