Curriculum
The WCCS curriculum process involves a yearly review of the state, national, international, and organizational standards in the various content areas. If significant changes have occurred, the WCCS curriculum will be updated to reflect those changes. In this way, we hope to keep the curriculum as up-to-date as possible. This will also assure that, in adoption years, the focus can be on changing materials rather than needing to make major changes to the curriculum itself.
Each year WCCS reviews and edits all curricular areas with an instructional leader assigned to each. The CORE curricular areas include Language Arts/English, Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Information Processing Skills. The Related Arts areas include Visual Art, Music, Physical Education, Health, Industrial Technology, and Consumer and Family Skills.
The Instructional Leaders (Standards Committee) will review state, national, international and organizational standards yearly in their area to see if changes have been made. He/She will weigh any changes against our present curriculum and our local Define the Graduate standards. The Instructional Leader then communicates these changes and his/her recommendations for changes in the WCCS curriculum to grade levels and subject area teachers at elementary and middle school levels.
All input feeds back to the Instructional Leader in each curricular area. If major changes have been proposed or conflict exists in the recommendations, a voluntary meeting to determine a final recommendation is held. This final recommendation goes to the Standards Coordinator and the Standards Committee and the Assistant Superintendent. This committee then decides whether the curriculum shall remain unchanged or if the recommendation for change will be submitted to the WCCS Corporation Coordinating Committee.
The CCC will discuss the proposed changes and, if there are no questions or concerns from them, they will submit the changes to the School Board to be adopted for the next school year.
Rubrics, lesson plans, and resources are added to the WCCS curriculum in a similar manner. A working committee developed initial standards and formats in these areas. Items are added by being submitted to the Standards Committee. Submissions can take place anytime, but additions to the Curriculum page on our web site are made twice a year.
