LETTER TO PARENTS: PRINTABLE VERSION
Eagle Track Athletes and Parents,
I want to say that I am very excited about being the head track coach at Columbia City High School. I want to make sure that we open a line of communication between our coaching staff, players, parents, and boosters. I will also be contacting past alumni and community members to get everyone involved with Eagle Track! We have a long and exciting journey ahead of us and I know everyone will want to be along for the ride.
I wanted to send this letter out to help give you an idea of what the next several months will look like. All of the things I mention here are subject to change, but this should help those of you that like to schedule ahead. I also wanted you to know what you can expect from me and our program as we move forward. I will be meeting and interviewing coaches over the next couple of weeks and hopefully will have a staff in place very soon.
First off, I want to talk about some scheduling items. The strength and conditioning program will start on Monday, January 25th. The program will run on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:45. There will be a Parent Meeting on February 10th at 6:00 P.M. in the cafeteria. We will cover the parent handbook, calendar of events, and our booster President Carol Fausey will sign people up for food distribution for track meets. Our first official day of track practice is on February 15th. We need all athletes to make sure they have their physical form, waiver and release of liability for all sports form, athletic training information card, and medical treatment consent form completed and turned in by this day.
Second, I believe it is very important to have full team participation and commitment to our off-season and summer programs. This time period is very important to our success next spring. “Champions are not made during the season; they are made in the off-season.” We will use our Strength and Conditioning opportunities to begin building the body up to allow for our athletes to gain the strength, power, and endurance needed to compete for a state championship. This is important in having our athlete’s base built up for the following season. With this being said there are two weeks throughout the summer where we can have no contact with our players. These two weeks are June 28th-July 2nd and July 26th-July 30th. It is important that we lift our athletes throughout the summer to prepare for next spring. I encourage you to use these two weeks if you are going on vacation or other activities. We will make things as simple as possible, but you must do your part in learning our system.
Lastly, you can expect several things from me. I am very strict when it comes to discipline, hard work, and dedication. We will work harder than you have ever worked before, but the payoffs will be greater than ever. I will not tolerate behavior problems on or off the track and especially not in the classroom. After saying that, you will not find anyone that will work harder for you than me and our staff. If you are having problems with anything, my door will always be open. I will be checking grades a minimum of every two weeks. We cannot afford to have athletes missing because of academic reasons. More importantly, your academics are the most important part of your high school experience. It is important to remember that athletics are a privilege, not a right. We will strive to be perfect in all things that we do!
In closing, I want to remind you that we are all in this together. We must all work together towards one common goal, a state championship. We must believe, not that it is possible, but that we will win the state championship! When we do this, we have begun our journey in the right direction! I am very excited to get to know each of you individually and begin our quest for greatness! WE ARE EAGLES!
Sincerely,
Coach Nelson
